Bogotá, May 24, 2024. Fundación Corazón Verde, in partnership with the heirs and copyright holders of QUINO and El Dorado Airport, officially brings Mafalda, the iconic character created by Argentine cartoonist Quino, to Colombia.
Mafalda arrives at El Dorado Airport to celebrate her 60th anniversary and be part of an exhibition that aims to transform lives through art. Proceeds from the sale and auction of Mafalda pieces will go to the social work of Fundación Corazón Verde that benefits the families, widows, and orphans of the National Police.
This initiative, led by El Coso, the artistic program designed by Fundación Corazón Verde, features the participation of 40 renowned artists who will create 38 cm Mafalda pieces using various techniques and artistic languages. In addition, notable Colombian artists such as Santiago Cárdenas, Nadín Ospina, and Gabriel Ortega, along with prominent international artists like Marcelo Wong and Pez Barcelona, will be part of this grand exhibition.
Mafalda's first stop will be at El Dorado. A total of 14 large-format Mafalda works will be displayed throughout the main Colombian terminal from May 23 to May 27, 2024. The exhibition will then continue at Parque de la 93 from May 28 to June 4. On June 5, the pieces will head to their final destination for a major charity sale and auction organized by Fundación Corazón Verde.
Natali Leal, General Manager of El Dorado, stated, "This partnership between El Dorado and Fundación Corazón Verde of the National Police is very significant for us, as, in addition to being aligned with one of our objectives that is to highlight cultural projects that promote art within our facilities and focuses on the comprehensive improvement of the quality of life for the families of police officers who are victims of violence."
Following this launch, traveling exhibitions and sales will commence in Bogota, at shopping malls, social clubs, and the Fundación Corazón Verde's El Coso store, alternating with exhibitions outside the city in major capitals such as Barranquilla, Cali, and Medellín.
Mafalda's relevance in Latin America goes beyond entertainment. Her ability to reflect on social, political, and economic issues has made her a symbol of critical thinking and the fight for a better world. Her influence stands as an icon of empowerment and protest.
Since 2001, Fundación Corazón Verde has organized art auctions and exhibitions in various cities across the country, with themes such as ‘ARBORIZARTE, ANIMARTE, and EQUUS ARTE’, among others, involving over 130 of the country's most important visual artists and more than 400 large-format pieces.
Mafalda's arrival in Bogotá promises to be an exciting event for all admirers of this beloved character.
About Mafalda:
Mafalda's story began unexpectedly, as part of an advertising campaign that never saw the light of day. However, her debut in the Buenos Aires newspaper Primera Plana on September 29, 1964, marked the start of a legacy that would endure through time. Quino, the genius behind Mafalda, has been honored throughout his career with numerous awards, including the Konex de Honor Award in 2022 and the Special Lifetime Achievement Post Mortem Award from the National Arts Fund of Argentina in 2020.
About El Coso:
This is the program designed by Fundación Corazón Verde around art. It is one of the most important resource-generating engines for their social investment projects. From the beginning, it has enjoyed the participation and support of great artists such as David Manzur, Pedro Ruíz, Hugo Zapata, Federico Uribe, and Omar Rayo, among others. With their talent and empathy, they have made art a vehicle for social well-being. Ten art seasons have been held, including ‘Arborizarte, Animarte, Equusarte, Aflorarte, Elevarte’, and others. The success of these initiatives, thanks to the commitment of the supporting artists, has allowed us to make a difference in the lives of thousands of families. For both individual and collective exhibitions, we feature a wide range of artists, from emerging young talents to established artists with extensive careers.
Fundación Corazón Verde is a non-profit organization established in 1998. Its purpose is to develop social initiatives aimed at comprehensively improving the quality of life for the families of Colombian police officers, widows, orphans, and disabled officers who are victims of violence and conflict in the country. Our social programs are focused on providing education and psychological assistance to this vulnerable population.
