The airport commemorates Earth Day by recycling 100% of rainwater and deploying its entire fleet of electric cars.
El Dorado's new electric fleet consists of 18 double-cabin trucks, available for mobility in operations, maintenance, and security areas. Concerning water conservation, El Dorado treats over 1 million cubic meters of water annually, collecting rainwater from the terminal roofs and treating wastewater to return high-quality water to the Bogota River. Regarding recycling, 80% of the 20 tons of waste generated daily in airport operations is sorted and given a second use.
Bogota, April 18, 2024. As part of Earth Day celebrations, coinciding with the urgent need to unite efforts to protect water, El Dorado presents various initiatives complementing its commitment to responsible and sustainable operations.
El Dorado is introducing a new electric vehicle fleet in operations, maintenance, and security areas, now 100% electric with 18 double-cabin vehicles. This is complemented by the installation of 6 charging points powered by the airport's solar panel system, promoting the use of clean energy within the airport community.
Concerning water resource management, El Dorado is recognized for initiatives to reduce water consumption, recycle and reuse water on its premises, and return high-quality water to the Bogota River. The airport has a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that annually returns 1.1 million liters of high-quality water to the Bogotá River, 30 liters per second returned in perfect condition to the river.
Similarly, El Dorado has a rainwater harvesting system that allows significant resource savings. This mechanism includes flow meters, motion sensors, and manual discharge controls integrated into urinals and toilets. Another significant action of the terminal in its commitment to climate change is the replacement of 25,000 conventional luminaires with LEDs, optimization of the air conditioning system, and the installation of 10,368 solar panels.
Through various energy-saving tactics, it has been possible to reduce emissions of over 1,375 tons of carbon dioxide annually, representing a 78% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions. Likewise, El Dorado has collaborated in the planting of 3,000 trees in Canoas Park, aiming to contribute to the regeneration of degraded soils.
With these initiatives, El Dorado reaffirms its commitment to fighting climate change and strengthening environmentally respectful sustainable operations.
