The Airport has reached the highest level and is recognized as the first in Latin America for its efforts in reducing the carbon footprint.

  • Thanks to Opain's efforts in optimization and energy efficiency, El Dorado has managed to reduce 77% of direct emissions.
  • El Dorado has been participating in the International Airport Council's program since 2017, demonstrating and verifying a significant reduction in emissions through the implementation of climate change projects, plans, and management.

Bogotá, September 2023 - The International Airport Council and its Latin America and Caribbean office (ACI-LAC) announced that El Dorado International Airport has become the first airport in the region to achieve Level 4 "Transformation" in ACI's Airport Carbon Accreditation program.

This program is a global initiative designed to recognize airports' efforts in measuring, managing, and reducing carbon emissions. The program offers six progressive levels, starting from "Mapping" and culminating in the highest level of "Transition," demonstrating an airport's commitment to sustainable practices and carbon neutrality.

"This recognition is the result of our work and commitment to sustainable operation management and positions us as leaders in reducing the carbon footprint of the sector. We will continue to work collaboratively with the airport community to further reduce direct emissions and advance our climate change strategy," said Natalí Leal, General Manager of Opain.

El Dorado has been participating in the program since 2017, demonstrating and verifying significant emission reductions through the implementation of climate change projects, plans, and management. Now, the Level 4 achievement by El Dorado demonstrates a comprehensive carbon management approach, including significant carbon emission reduction measures and stakeholder involvement in addressing environmental challenges collectively.

The initiatives of El Dorado International Airport have included:

  • Investment in renewable energy sources.
  • Adoption of energy-efficient technologies.
  • Promotion of waste reduction.
  • Participation in community carbon offset projects.

These initiatives have materialized in renewable energy projects implemented by the airport, such as the use of over 11,000 solar panels for energy supply at the airport; the use of LED technology bulbs that contribute to lighting efficiency and an 11.7% reduction in electricity consumption; the installation of two solar panel systems in schools in the communities near the airport, and the utilization of nearly 80% of the waste generated at the terminal.

ACI-LAC (The International Airport Council for Latin America and the Caribbean) has congratulated El Dorado International Airport for this groundbreaking achievement and encouraged other regional airports to follow its example and proactivity on the path to environmental excellence. The organization has recognized Opain's leadership in aligning carbon emission management with global climate goals, driving the transformation of its operations with absolute emission reduction while reinforcing its commitment to positive change within the aviation industry.

"The achievement of El Dorado International Airport is admirable and sets an inspiring precedent for airports throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Their commitment to reducing carbon emissions and adopting sustainable practices demonstrates the airport's determination to create a greener and more sustainable aviation sector," said Dr. Rafael Echevarne, Director General of ACI-LAC.
