Jardín Estación Central: The Green Oasis Transforming the Heart of Bogotá

  • Green revitalization in downtown Bogotá: Jardín Estación Central, with more than 2,400 trees and 5,000 plants, temporarily transforms Calle 24A and Av. Caracas into a community gathering space that connects nature with urban life.
  • Art, culture, and diversity: The launch event will feature designer Ricardo Pava, TV host Heisel Mora, activist Diamantina, and music from DJ Julio Victoria and Colectivo Manu Mojito, celebrating inclusion and local talent in a vibrant space.

Bogotá, September 25, 2024. In an innovative effort to revitalize the city center, RenoBo, Bogotá's Urban Renewal and Development Company, and the Bogotá Botanical Garden have joined forces to create Jardín Estación Central. This temporary space not only offers a green respite in the heart of the city but will also serve as a community meeting point where nature, art, and culture intertwine.

Covering 7,200 square meters, Jardín Estación Central is a prime example of how temporary urbanism can enhance the quality of life in urban areas. This urban garden, located at Calle 24A and Av. Caracas, has been designed to offer residents and visitors a multifunctional space integrating recreational, artistic, sports, and environmental activities.

The project was developed in close collaboration with the local community and entities such as the Secretaries of Habitat, Mobility, Government, IPES, the Road Maintenance Unit, the Santafé Local Government, among others. In addition to beautifying the area, this intervention improves security and lighting, creating a more welcoming and safe environment for all Bogotá residents.

Carlos Felipe Reyes, manager of RenoBo, emphasized the importance of this initiative: "Jardín Estación Central is not just an urban garden; it is a space for community interaction that improves air quality and regenerates the environment. This temporary project is a key step in our mission to transform Bogotá’s center into a more livable place."

The garden hosts 2,400 trees from 16 species and 5,000 ornamental plants, all provided by the Botanical Garden and the IDU. These trees will later be relocated to various reforestation projects in the city, especially in the downtown area, ensuring their long-term positive environmental impact.

The space includes platforms where students, neighbors, and workers from the area can participate in educational workshops, cultural events, and daily activities. This temporary garden represents an innovative way of integrating nature into urban life, contributing to the enjoyment of public spaces and citizens' well-being.

The launch of Jardín Estación Central is enriched by the participation of renowned talents and entities contributing to the cultural offerings of the space. The event will feature collaborations from luxury designer Ricardo Pava, known for his inclusive approach; Heisel Mora, a charismatic figure in Colombian media; and Diamantina, activist and founder of the Fundación Amor Real, which focuses on including homeless youth through textile art.

The artistic program includes performances by DJ Julio Victoria and DJ Santiago Castaño, leading figures in Colombia’s electronic music scene, and Colectivo Manu Mojito, celebrating diversity and highlighting the LGBTI community in an inclusive space.

With this initiative, RenoBo demonstrates that urban revitalization can go hand in hand with respect for nature and community integration. Jardín Estación Central not only temporarily beautifies Bogotá's downtown but also reinforces the city's connection with its natural surroundings, offering its residents a space to enjoy, interact, and reconnect with nature amid the urban landscape.

For Natali Leal, General Manager of OPAIN: "This joint effort with RenoBo and Bogotá’s Mayor’s Office to create Jardín Estación Central is a testament to our commitment to environmental well-being and breathing life into the heart of the city. We strongly believe in the importance of generating a positive impact in Bogotá, the home of El Dorado Airport. We are allies in building a greener and more sustainable environment for future generations."

Jardín Estación Central not only temporarily beautifies Bogotá's downtown but also reinforces the city's connection with its natural surroundings, offering its residents a space to enjoy, interact, and reconnect with nature amid the urban landscape. The project would not be complete without the participation of key organizations such as Asosandiego, El Dorado Airport, Camacol Bogotá and Cundinamarca, Incca University of Colombia, among others.

This project not only invites the public to enjoy the present but also to imagine a future where Bogotá transforms into a greener, more sustainable, and livable city.
