El Dorado has a new measurement and monitoring system that helps control the flow and passenger capacity in real-time.

  • The system, known as XOVIS, aims to optimize passenger movements, comply with biosecurity measures, and streamline internal airport operations.
  • A total of 40 motion sensors have been installed in immigration, emigration, and national check-in areas to enhance airport operations and control overcrowding.
  • It is expected that by 2022, the gates will be equipped with sensors to count the total number of passengers entering the terminal.

Bogotá, May 20, 2021. El Dorado remains focused on innovation and technology that improves the traveler experience and adapts to the new requirements and challenges of mobility, biosecurity, and waiting times. For this reason, it has implemented a new system to measure and monitor the flow of passengers at the airport terminal in real-time to optimize airport processes.

Luis Soto, Technology Manager at El Dorado Airport, explained: "This is an innovative technology used by many airports in Europe that allows us to instantly know the airport's occupancy and passenger flow so that we can take immediate actions, such as allocating more customer service personnel to avoid overcrowding and optimize timing. Additionally, we can measure passenger waiting times in each area and in the lines from check-in to boarding gates."

The system, consisting of 20 sensors in emigration, 18 sensors in the national check-in area, and 2 sensors in immigration, seeks to optimize passenger movements, adhere to biosecurity measures, and streamline internal operational processes.

Since early April, the system has entered a stabilization phase and has allowed for passenger counting, monitoring of queue length, filling level for individual rows, waiting times, area saturation per square meter, and identification of "hotspots" where distancing compliance needs to be enforced.

This technological innovation had a cost of $230,000 and will be operational in June. In the medium term, El Dorado plans to implement the use of screens in areas where the sensors are located so that passengers can know the estimated waiting time in queues and better manage their time to reach the boarding gates.
