El Dorado Now Breathes Like a Forest, Improving Air Quality in Its Surroundings
- 1,000 square meters of the airport’s viaduct have been treated with a photocatalytic nanotechnology inspired by the photosynthesis process of plants. This technology uses chemical processes to eliminate common atmospheric pollutants like sulfur oxide and nitrogen oxide, contributing to better air quality in urban environments.
- The impact is equivalent to the air-purifying effect of 1,000 mature trees or removing 330 gasoline-powered cars from circulation.
Bogotá, April 23, 2025. El Dorado Airport remains committed to environmental protection and the fight against climate change. In collaboration with Murarte Global, 1,000 square meters of the terminal have been coated with a special paint containing photocatalytic nanotechnology. This technology, inspired by the way plants purify the environment through photosynthesis, uses light, air, and moisture to remove pollutants that degrade air quality.
El Dorado is the first airport in the Americas to adopt this innovative, air-purifying paint, allowing travelers, visitors, and employees to breathe cleaner air and enjoy healthier spaces.
Additionally, this technology has been recognized globally by organizations such as NASA and iScape as one of the projects set to shape the future of environmental protection in the coming years.
For Natalí Leal, General Manager of OPAIN, “We are committed to making the airport an efficient, pleasant, and sustainable space – one that now also provides cleaner air for our travelers and visitors. This new implementation adds to our ongoing efforts to combat climate change, including water conservation, energy efficiency, and waste management.”
Juan Carlos García, General Manager of Murarte Global – the company responsible for the project, added, “This initiative aligns perfectly with Opain's sustainability policy and its constant pursuit of efficient balance and sustainable connectivity. At the same time, it strengthens our commitment to tackling climate change through energy efficiency, waste management, renewable energy use, and water resource management.”
This initiative adds to other sustainability actions implemented at El Dorado, including:
- Voluntarily planting 4,000 trees: 3,000 in the lower Bogotá River basin (Parque Canoas) and 1,000 in the Wakata Bio-Park Nature Reserve.
- Operating a 100% electric fleet of 18 airside vehicles, supported by six charging points.
- Installing 14,300 LED lights, generating a 51% energy savings, and using 10,400 solar panels to power the airport's energy needs.
- Recycling 80% of generated waste and treating 100% of collected rainwater for reuse in restrooms.
- Treating wastewater discharged into the Bogotá River to optimal standards.
- Installing 65 free potable water refill stations, eliminating the use of over 5.5 million single-use plastic bottles.
