El Aeropuerto El Dorado receives the highest recognition as a Platinum Zero Waste Member by ICONTEC
- Under its Comprehensive Solid Waste Management program, the airport currently recovers 64% of the waste generated at the airport, giving it a new purpose as raw material for the production of new products.
- The terminal aims to achieve a 70% recycling rate by 2025 through a strategic alliance with ANDI under the "Conexión" program.
- In 2022, El Dorado, in partnership with Esenttia, will transform plastic waste generated at the airport into parks for the neighboring communities of Engativá, Fontibón, and the municipality of Funza.
- The Waste Management Model designed for El Dorado, as part of ODINSA's sustainability strategy, allows for the efficient handling of waste generated by nearly 35 million passengers, making it a benchmark in the region.
Bogotá, April 6, 2022 - For the fourth consecutive year, ICONTEC has awarded El Dorado Airport the Zero Waste certification, elevating it to Platinum Membership for its commitment and performance in implementing comprehensive solid waste management programs and reducing its environmental impact. Under this program, the airport currently recovers 64% of the waste generated in the terminal. This, combined with other actions, has led to significant progress in achieving the proposed goals of reducing its carbon footprint by 57% of scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2028. In this regard, Andrés Ortega, General Manager of El Dorado Airport, stated: "This new Zero Waste certification awarded by ICONTEC is a testament to the airport's dedication to the environment. We will continue to drive transformation from the business sector to continue caring for and conserving the planet."
Thanks to this waste management effort, the terminal aims to reach a 70% recycling rate by 2025, a goal supported by two strategic alliances:
- With ANDI through the "Conexión" program, involving the training of more than 400 employees from different establishments and entities participating in the daily activities of the terminal.
- With Esenttia, a company within the Ecopetrol Group, where efforts are underway to transform plastic waste generated at the airport into parks for neighboring communities.
The certification granted by ICONTEC is based on circular economy models that enable organizations to implement strategies for waste reduction, reuse, utilization, and valorization.
In this way, El Dorado reaffirms its commitment to building sustainable connections with the environment and establishes itself as an example in the aviation sector in terms of environmental matters and corporate responsibility.
