Bogotá, July 22, 2021 - El Dorado Airport is the first airport in the world to be certified as a LEED Platinum building for existing building operations and maintenance, version 4.1, awarded by the US Green Building Council. This recognition is the highest of its kind and is granted only to constructions that meet outstanding sustainability standards.
After receiving the certification, Andrés Ortega, General Manager of El Dorado, stated: "We are at a moment where the planet needs a real contribution from companies, and it is precisely through reducing carbon footprint and increasing energy efficiency that we will leave a better planet for future generations. This is our commitment from El Dorado. We are very proud to receive this certification as it is part of our daily management to meet sustainable development goals."
To obtain this certification, various aspects were evaluated over 12 months, including:
- Energy efficiency.
- Efficient water consumption.
- Waste management policies.
- Indoor environment quality/human experience.
- Integration with the city and transportation system, and innovation.
El Dorado achieved a score of 82 out of 100.
This recognition is the result of ongoing transformation processes at the airport, with a focus on being environmentally friendly and mitigating the impacts of air operations in the capital.
El Dorado has installed over 14,200 LED lights made from recycled materials, which generate 22% less environmental impact. This year, it is expected to replace the remaining 14.99% of lights, resulting in additional savings equivalent to the energy consumption of 1,235 80m² homes.
Additionally, efforts are being made to increase green energy production capacity through solar panels installed on the terminal's roofs, currently providing 12% of the total energy required for its operation. This green energy generation project aims to increase its capacity to 40% in the coming years, further solidifying the commitment to future generations.
El Dorado employs state-of-the-art technologies certified for indoor air care and treatment to ensure the health and well-being of all users, exceeding international standards' minimum requirements.
